The Best Advice for Aspiring Writers

The purpose of this blog is to keep track of my writing, to serve as a platform to pursue my dreams, and help me become a better writer and connect with people. Hello? Anyone reading?

My first (and so far, only) rule is to have fun. For years, I watched, read, listened, and learned many tips and tricks, advice, and guides on how to write. Nevertheless, the only guide that seemed to work is the one I remind myself of now: There is no point in pursuing your dreams unless you are having fun.

Writing is a source of self-expression. It’s a way to explore the fictional characters and worlds we dream up. It never worked for me to focus on outlining, interviewing characters, and forcing myself to sit and complete an entire chapter. Are you the same?

Self-discipline and consistency are important for writers. I don’t know about you, but it would be ten times harder to write consistently when there’s an overwhelming sense of responsibility and stress. I choose joy.

The best writing advice I could give is to have fun! Enjoy the process. Go back to the childlike creativity and write with the love of writing, not with a sense of obligation.

Don’t even count words or worry your story isn’t interesting. Skip the parts you feel stuck on and write the scenes you’re excited about. This is advice I try to remind myself of when I’m being hard on myself. I hope it helps you.

With that said, I’m working on one of two projects (one of which is a murder-esque mystery, currently sitting at 737 words), all while I’m fighting Anxiety and its henchman twins, Self-Doubt and Self-Loathing. I hope Fun, the protagonist, will win.
